Checkouts of 70 and 98 made the opening set light work for Mandigers before Harms replied immediately on tops in the following set. An early break of throw in the third set gave Harms the edge for the first time. In a roller-coaster match-up, Mandigers would draw level once again, tops coming to his rescue this time around.
With both players averaging in the low nineties, it would have to be something special to create a gap. A 136-checkout doing exactly that as Mandigers regained the lead for a second time. It seemed as if the match was going to a final set as Harms nailed double one, but two legs on the spin from ‘Sparky’ put him right back in the mix. Two missed darts at double tops for Harms would prove disastrous as Mandigers swooped on double to confirm his place in the quarter-finals for the first time in his career.
Trina Gulliver MBE continued her sensational record at the Lakeside County Club as she defeated Polish qualifier Karolina Podgórska. ‘The Golden Girl’ is now five out of five in terms of last leg deciders as she needed the fifth and final leg to defeat the 31-year-old. As Podgórska took the opening set on throw, missing a 148 on double 14 for a barnburner of a checkout. The ten-time champion replied in emphatic fashion, a stronghold of throw sending the match to a final set.
Gulliver would break the Podgórska throw with an ice-cool 100 checkout on double ten, but the Pole would strike back in the following leg with another break of throw. Eventually, the match would go to a crucial deciding leg, Gulliver hitting the bullseye to claim the throw. After a strong scoring leg, Trina would nail double five for the third time in the match to preserve her outstanding record in last leg shoot-outs and set up a quarter-final meeting with Lorraine Winstanley.
Michael Unterbuchner stormed into the quarter-finals of the BDO World Professional Darts Championship with a spectacular 4-0 victory over former Wales captain Wayne Warren. This is the heaviest recorded victory on the Lakeside stage for the German, who will be looking to go one step further this time around.
Two ton-plus checkouts in the opening set of the match got the ball rolling for the German star, but the best was still to come for ‘T-Rex’. His average lifted well over the 90 mark as he extended his advantage of Warren, the Welshman struggling to gain traction after an excellent opening display against Mark Layton on Sunday evening. A clean sweep in the third set put the finishing line in sight for Unterbuchner, and the win would be confirmed after just four sets of play. A magical 130 checkout on double five sealing Unterbuchner’s place in the quarter-finals for the second consecutive year as he sets up a tie with Willem Mandigers on Friday.
