Leighton Bennett became the youngest ever BDO World Youth Darts Champion as he defeated Scotland’s Nathan Girvan in a thrilling final on the on the Lakeside stage. At just 13 years old, Lincolnshire thrower Bennett defeated two-time finalist Girvan over three sets.
‘Boom Boom’ was pushed all the way in the opening set as Girvan broke the throw in the third leg of the match. Bennett returned the favour immediately, a maximum followed by a clinical shot on double four giving him the edge.
After taking the first set by such a narrow margin, the Cambridgeshire Open champion piled in a second maximum of the contest as he took the second set 3-1. With the nerves clearly getting the 16-year-old Girvan, Bennett took advantage, a third 180 and more clinical outer ring finishing putting the Scot on the back foot once again.
The trophy-winning shot would come moments later as Bennett took out the Bullseye on 121 for the biggest victory of his career. We can expect big things in the years to come from both players, but for now, Leighton Bennett is your BDO World Youth Champion 2019.
