Glen Durrant confirmed himself amongst the darting elite as he defeated Scott Waites in the final of the BDO World Professional Darts Championship. The Middlesbrough man now joins Eric Bristow in becoming the second player to win three consecutive BDO World Championship titles.

The crucial moment came in the eighth set of the match as Durrant took out checkouts of 70 and 80 to give himself a two-set cushion over ‘Scotty-2-Hotty’. The 49-year-old would shift into top gear from that point onwards, leaving Waites in his wake.

Durrant kicked off the match in spectacular fashion, taking the opening set against throw with a 100% success rate on the doubles. Waites would strike back immediately, holding his nerve to level proceedings, despite a clinical 131 checkout from Durrant.

The following two sets would also go against throw with Waites taking out 128 to stop Durrant gaining an early two-set advantage. Waites would take the lead for the first time in the match as he added a further ton-plus checkout to his outstanding final record. Durrant wouldn’t waste time in returning the favour, remaining ruthless on the outer ring to heap the pressure back on the 2016 champion.

Yorkshire representative Waites would take out the fifth 160 checkouts of the tournament, but a break of throw from Durrant and a missed shot at the bullseye would haul him back in front.

Then would come the pivotal moment. ‘Duzza’ taking out checkouts of 70 and 80 to open up a two-set advantage for the first time in the contest. From that point onwards it was all Durrant, claiming the ninth set against throw as Waites attempted to reduce the deficit.

Waites would take a two-leg advantage in the tenth set but just couldn’t find that outer ring at the crucial moments. A 114-checkout from Durrant would set the Waites nerves jangling, and an additional double 16 took it to a decider.

Three missed doubles from Waites would hand Durrant the chance for a history-making third world title. The crowd erupted at Durrant sealed the match on double 16, matching Eric Bristow’s long-standing record as he won the BDO World Professional Darts Championship for the third time in his career.
