Report – Women’s World Championship Final – Mikuru Suzuki Vs Lorraine Winstanley
‘The Miracle’ didn’t drop a set throughout the duration of the tournament as she defeated Lisa Ashton in opening round, before adding victories against Sharon Prins and Maria O’Brien to her ever-growing resume.
It would be an emphatic performance in the final from Suzuki, as she defeated Lorraine Winstanley 3-0 with a 90 average, as tens of thousands of fans tuned in to the BDO YouTube Channel to watch her career-defining performance.
She opened up the contest with a 140, and that was just the beginning of some relentless scoring from the Japanese ace. The pressure was piled back on to Winstanley as Suzuki took out the second biggest checkout of the women’s tournament in the second leg, a 148 getting a packed house off their feet at the Lakeside.
She would tie up the first set with an 80 checkout before starting the second set in similar fashion. Back to back 180’s putting the crowd on edge as she searched for the first nine-dart finish by a women’ player on the BDO stage. Unfortunately, the seventh dart was missed, but after missing double ten for a 140, she would take a two-leg lead in the second set. Winstanley would take a first leg in the final but a dominant Suzuki would double her advantage with an ice-cool 74 checkout.
The third set would come in convincing fashion for ‘The Miracle’, staying calm on double 16 to take the early initiative. Lorraine would pull as leg back on her throw, but the relentless Suzuki continued to score heavily. After taking the third leg with relative ease, she would confirm her place amongst the elite by nailing double top at the first attempt. Taking home the magnificent trophy and £12,000 cheque to Japan, where there will be many more players looking to emulate her success.
